A Girl Must Know How to Protect Herself — Miss Vanessa’s Strong Advice to Parents

Former Miss Rwanda 2015 First Runner-Up Vanessa Raissa Uwase, popularly known on social media as Her Majesty Vanessa, has sparked debate after sharing a strongly worded message urging parents to teach their daughters self-defense from a young age.

Vanessa, who recently welcomed a child, shared the message on her Instagram account, encouraging parents to enroll girls in martial arts and equip them with skills to protect themselves.

In the message, she wrote: “If you have a daughter in this sick world, the only thing you can do to protect her right now is to teach her from a very young age self defense. Put them into martial arts. All kinds.”

She went on to express her concerns about girls’ safety around men, writing: “A world with men is a dangerous world. So let’s teach our daughters how to protect themselves from these animals.”

Vanessa further warned parents against assuming that something harmful could never happen to their own children. “You never think it will be her until it’s her.”

She also said girls should not automatically assume they are safe simply because they are around people they know, listing relatives and family friends among those who may be around them.

“She’s never safe around a man. Whether it’s her brother, her dad, a uncle, her cousin, her gay family friend, etc…”

Vanessa continued: “A man is a man and these creatures are different from us women.”

According to her message, she believes women need to recognize potential risks in order to better protect their daughters. “The day you’ll put that in your head as a woman will be the day you’re able to protect your daughters.”

She concluded her message with another call for girls to learn martial arts and self-defense: “Sooooo martial arts please! Let’s teach them how to be more dangerous than men.”

Before sharing this message, Vanessa had also shared posts highlighting stories involving men who allegedly mistreated or betrayed women. She introduced those posts with the words: “I don’t hate men, but…”

Her latest comments have attracted attention because of the strong language she used when describing men, particularly her references to them as “animals”.

At the center of her message, however, is a call for girls to be equipped with self-defense skills from an early age, particularly through martial arts, as a way of helping them respond to potentially dangerous situations.
