70-Year-Old Rwandan Woman Leads Over 800 Women in Basketball Revolution

In Rwanda’s Kirehe District, 70-year-old Trifine Mukangamije inspires over 800 women embracing basketball to improve health, bond socially, and defy age stereotypes.

It’s not common to see older adults engaging in competitive sports, but in Rwanda’s Kirehe District, over 800 women have united to excel at basketball, breaking stereotypes and embracing fitness.

These women practice on purpose-built basketball courts in Nyamirama, constructed by a non-governmental organization called Shooting Touch. Based in Rwanda and Boston, USA, the organization also provides skilled coaching to the players.

Leading these inspiring women is Trifine Mukangamije, a remarkable 70-year-old who defies age expectations by actively playing basketball. Her story has captivated many as she credits the sport with improving her health and overall well-being. She shared her journey in an interview with the BBC, explaining how basketball helped her overcome chronic back pain and other health challenges.

She said, "Today, I feel great and strong. I used to suffer from high blood pressure and severe back pain that left me unable to stand. Even sitting was difficult; I needed assistance to get up. I sought treatment at Gahini Hospital, but nothing worked. It’s basketball and regular physical activity that healed me."

Affectionately nicknamed "Kaka" (Grandma) by her teammates, Mukangamije is the oldest member of this dynamic group. She practices diligently every Monday and Thursday evening on the Nyamirama courts, playing alongside women aged 50 and above.

Delice Niyonsaba, a former basketball player in Rwanda’s women’s league and a coach for the past three years, emphasizes just how transformative basketball has been for these women.

"Basketball has changed their lives. They come here not just to practice but also to socialize," said Niyonsaba. "Some of them have even mastered the game exceptionally well."

She further added, "There are countless testimonies from women who’ve recovered from high blood pressure and other illnesses. The overall quality of their lives has significantly improved."
