20th Gorilla Naming Ceremony in Musanze: Artists Shine and Leaders Attend

Celebrate 40 baby gorillas at Musanze's 20th Kwita Izina with star performances by Bruce Melodie, Ariel Wayz & leaders like PM Nsegiyumva in attendance.

On Friday, September 5, 2025, Musanze District’s Kinigi sector came alive for the 20th edition of the annual Gorilla Naming Ceremony, popularly known as Kwita Izina. In this joyous celebration, 40 baby gorillas from 15 families were officially given names, with over 10,000 attendees gathering to witness the event's magic.

The ceremony opened with electrifying performances by renowned artists. Among them was rapper Kivumbi, who captivated the crowd, especially the youth, with his popular tracks like “Sabrina,” a collaboration with Mike Kayihura. Another highlight was Ariel Wayz, whose soulful renditions like “You Should Know” had the audience mesmerized. Chriss Eazy enthralled the crowd with fan favorites such as “Folomiana,” a collaboration with Kevin Kade. The Ben also joined in, enhancing the musical spirit of the ceremony.

Bruce Melodie's standout performance was a showstopper, as he took the stage in bold red and white attire. He received overwhelming applause while performing chart-toppers like “Selebura” and other hits that kept the audience dancing throughout.

Adding significance and gravitas to the ceremony, distinguished leaders attended, including Prime Minister Dr. Justin Nsegiyumva and First Lady Jeannette Kagame. Their participation emphasized the importance of conservation and the ceremony's cultural significance.

This event marked an incredible milestone—the ceremony’s 20th edition. Since its inception, approximately 400 baby gorillas have been given names through this extraordinary tradition, further underscoring Rwanda's commitment to wildlife conservation.
