This year marked the milestone 20th Gorilla Naming Ceremony, an event graced by significant personalities such as First Lady Jeannette Kagame, Prime Minister Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva, RDB CEO Guy Africa Jean, Minister of Sports Nelly Mukazayire, and renowned global celebrities spanning cinema, sports, arts, and charity endeavors.
Nigerian artist Yemi Alade participated in naming one of the gorillas and expressed her excitement on Instagram. She revealed it was her first time attending this iconic event, describing it as a profound experience that would forever remind her of Rwanda's culture and conservation efforts.
“I was honored to name a baby gorilla ‘Kundwa,’ which means ‘beloved,’ alongside 40 other incredible individuals, including philanthropists, athletes, artists, and global citizens from all corners of the world,” she shared joyfully.
Yemi Alade proudly wore the traditional Rwandan outfit, “Umushanana,” during the ceremony. She stated, “We proudly donned Rwandan cultural attire, a symbol of respect and leadership. It deeply reminded me of the importance of preserving biodiversity and the remarkable bond between humans and wildlife like gorillas.”
Known for hit songs like ‘Africa’ with Sauti Sol, the singer highlighted fascinating insights about gorillas and humans, sharing that the two species differ by only 4% in genetic makeup and both carry offspring for nine months. “This taught me an invaluable life lesson about harmony and shared existence,” Yemi Alade noted.
She further narrated her transformative visit to Kinigi to see the majestic mountain gorillas, a once-in-a-lifetime moment she cherished deeply.
Yemi encouraged her followers worldwide to explore the beauty and conservation efforts of Rwanda. “You all need to visit Rwanda; you’ll thank me later. I recommend you ask for ‘Emmanuel’ as your tour guide—he’s simply the best!” she posted enthusiastically.
During her visit, Yemi bonded with fellow singer Khadja Nin, sharing memorable moments and promoting her own beauty line, “Yembeauty Lipstick,” to celebrate the cultural festivities.
Yemi Alade emphasized that wearing the symbolic Umushanana for the event was not only a unique cultural experience but also heightened her connection to Rwanda.
She stated the significance of naming the baby gorilla ‘Kundwa’—highlighting how it underscored the importance of wildlife and environmental preservation.
