This year’s festival embraced the theme: “Africa Without Borders.” More than just a basketball event, it served as a platform inspiring African youth to utilize sports, culture, and collaboration as tools for personal and community growth.
In an exclusive interview with The New Times, Masai Ujiri, founder of Giants of Africa and former president of the Toronto Raptors, commended Rwanda’s groundbreaking achievements in advancing sports infrastructure.
He remarked, "When you look at what is happening in Rwanda, particularly in terms of sports infrastructure, it’s evident that Rwanda is setting a benchmark for innovation and growth across Africa."
Masai elaborated on his belief that the festival’s progress symbolizes how sports can become a powerful tool in teaching African youth essential lessons about culture, values, and life’s purpose.
He shared, "Whether it’s family traditions, mentorship, nutrition, or fashion, sports unites us. We aim for these young people to explore their talents and develop the confidence to traverse Africa, sharing their gifts with peers."
One of the festival’s standout moments was the grand opening of Zaria Court Kigali: a world-class sports complex designed for versatility. The ribbon-cutting ceremony featured prominent guests, including President Paul Kagame, Africa’s richest man Aliko Dangote, and other key leaders.
Masai emphasized the broad potential of Zaria Court, stating, "Its versatility was showcased during a fashion show, transforming the venue from a basketball court into a celebrity stage. It’s inspiring to see such a dynamic cycle of events."
The comprehensive facility boasts various amenities, including an amphitheater, restaurants, bars, retail outlets, children’s playgrounds, five-a-side pitches, and spaces for live concerts.
He explained, "Here, people can enjoy meals before or after games, shop for team merchandise, or even stay in nearby hotels. This is more than just a facility—it fosters community connections, collaboration, and economic growth."
Masai Ujiri lauded President Kagame’s instrumental role: praising his dedication to investing in sports infrastructure as a critical pillar shaping Rwanda’s unique development path.
He stated, "Projects like these demand strategic planning. We deeply appreciate President Kagame’s unwavering support. Having influential figures like Aliko Dangote attend the Zaria Court inauguration is an extraordinary milestone, underscoring our aspirations for Africa’s progress."
Masai revealed his close bond with President Kagame, describing it as rooted in mutual respect and impactful sports initiatives. He said, "President Kagame is not only a trusted mentor but also a cherished companion to my family. His influence has propelled sports development in remarkable ways."
Aside from their friendship, Masai drew attention to Kagame’s role in opening doors for African youth: particularly through partnerships with the NBA and globally renowned teams.
He remarked, "Such initiatives have brought immense benefits to our youth. They’ve helped us host high-caliber tournaments and create platforms that unite communities beyond borders."
Reflecting on his life journey, Masai delivered a motivational speech urging African youth to dream boldly and view sports as an avenue to unlimited opportunities.
He expressed, "I wasn’t highly skilled or gifted, nor did I have the privileges young people enjoy today. Yet basketball became my gateway to a brighter future."
Masai emphasized that sports open doors not only for aspiring athletes but also for avenues in education, leadership, and business. He asserted, "Making it to the NBA isn’t the only success path. The sports world offers endless possibilities, and I want African youth to embrace this and achieve greatness beyond my accomplishments."
Revisiting his childhood in Zaria, Nigeria, Masai shared the origin of his unwavering drive: revealing how his experiences inspire his commitment to empowering African youth.
He conveyed, "I was once one of those kids wandering the streets of Zaria. Growing up among individuals brimming with talent gave me confidence in Africa’s potential to rise even higher."
Masai acknowledged figures like Dikembe Mutombo for motivating him to amplify his voice and advocate for African youth through sports. He concluded, "While I’m alive, I’ll continue leveraging this platform to uplift the youth and build something far greater."
