Tems: Breaking Barriers in Music, Empowering Women, and Investing in Sports

Nigerian star Tems reshapes Afropop by empowering women, achieving global success with Beyoncé and Rihanna, and investing in sports while inspiring future artists.

Tems shared how the early stages of her music career were fraught with obstacles, including difficulty gaining recognition and being unfairly overcharged. She explained, "I found that there is always a price to pay. There were many things I was not supposed to pay for, yet options were limited."

Afropop continues to gain worldwide popularity, but it remains a genre largely dominated by male artists. Industry powerhouses, often termed the "Big Three"—Burna Boy, Davido, and Wizkid—are men, while talented female artists like Tiwa Savage and Yemi Alade contend with persistent challenges, including gender-based harassment.

Earlier this year, Tems courageously responded to controversial comments about her physique after clips from her music video went viral on X. She remarked, “It’s just a body—I’ll grow bigger or smaller. I’ve never kept my body secret; I’ve never felt the need to show it off or hide it. When people dislike my body, it strangely helps me.”

Determined to transform the perception of women in the music industry, Tems launched her initiative, The Leading Vibe Initiative, aimed at empowering young girls across Africa to pursue careers in music.

The Nigerian star emphasized, “I promise that when I reach a point where I can do more, I will use this initiative to help ease the way for women to access opportunities, connect with larger audiences, and achieve their goals.”

Officially unveiled on Friday in Lagos, this initiative featured workshops, specialized training, and discussions designed to help emerging artists enhance their skills and cultivate meaningful collaborations.

Offering advice to aspiring female musicians, Tems said, “It’s vital to understand what you want for yourself, what your personal brand represents, and to define your boundaries. What are the things you refuse to do for fame, and what are the compromises you’re willing to make?”

Renowned for hits such as "Love Me Jeje" and "Free Mind," Tems reminded everyone that genuine passion for music is critical for success. She explained, “Not everyone who sings loves music. Fame isn’t what motivates me; I’d still be singing jazz in a small club on a casual Friday night.”

Over the last five years, Tems has reached incredible milestones, collaborating with icons like Beyoncé and Rihanna, amassing a staggering 17 million monthly listeners on Spotify, and performing on international stages.

Next month, she is set to join legendary British band Coldplay during their Wembley Stadium shows in England.

Reflecting on her achievements, Tems believes her success stems from staying “authentic” and “unique.” She stated, "Even when people suggest you change your music or your style, you stand firm and say, ‘No.’ If it means not signing with a label, so be it."

In addition to music, Tems is passionate about soccer. Recently, she made a groundbreaking investment by acquiring part ownership of the San Diego FC soccer team in the U.S. She expressed, “I never imagined owning or being involved with a football team.”

Her bold venture in sports reaffirms her belief that “people can have the courage to do things nobody thought possible.” She concluded, "I don’t just see myself as a singer or an artist—I’m much more than that."
