On Tuesday, November 18, 2025, the Government of Rwanda, ALX, and Anthropic officially announced a groundbreaking partnership aimed at introducing Artificial Intelligence (AI) into Rwanda’s schools. This ambitious initiative seeks to revolutionize modern teaching methods by focusing on research, innovation, and problem-solving.
Minister Paula Ingabire's Vision on AI Education
Minister Paula Ingabire emphasized that this innovative approach opens new doors for Rwanda, enabling its youth to acquire essential 21st-century skills. She stated, “This partnership will enhance teaching methods, support educators, and build a skilled workforce ready to thrive in the digital age.”
She further stressed that programs like Chidi are designed to empower educators by boosting their productivity, improving lesson structures, and providing essential tools for crafting lesson plans, curricula, and solutions through AI.
Teacher Training to Embrace AI Innovation
A press release highlighted the second phase of the program, which will see 2,000 Rwandan teachers trained by ALX. These courses will include hands-on knowledge of integrating AI, such as using Claude AI, into daily teaching tasks.
Minister Ingabire expressed confidence that this training initiative will elevate the capabilities of teachers while advancing the Rwandan education system to meet global benchmarks in technology-driven learning.
Chidi: A Game-Changer for African Education
The Chidi program is set to revolutionize learning by fostering active inquiry, critical thinking, and solution-oriented study practices for students, moving away from rote memorization. This approach is recognized as a transformative leap for education across Africa.
According to Minister Ingabire, this initiative aligns closely with Rwanda's Vision 2050, which aims to position the country as a leader in using technology in education and other critical sectors.
This milestone underscores Rwanda’s success in creating actionable policies that attract global institutions to invest in local talent and knowledge development.
Rwanda as an AI Hub for Africa
With Rwanda already lauded as a technological trailblazer in education, the program aspires to extend Chidi’s reach to other African nations. This would firmly establish Rwanda as a hub for AI-powered educational programs across the continent.
Minister Ingabire reiterated that such partnerships are crucial for achieving Rwanda's long-term goals of improving both education quality and technological innovation.
Educational Equity Across Africa
Through Chidi, Rwanda commits to transforming the African educational landscape by ensuring that every child has access to world-class academic tools and support, comparable to students in global tech hubs like Silicon Valley, Beijing, and London.
Insights from Minister of Education, Joseph Nsengimana
Minister Joseph Nsengimana articulated the broader African vision of empowering educators with AI tools to mold students into future-ready professionals equipped with critical skills.
He explained that Chidi focuses on minimizing lesson preparation time for teachers, providing personalized learning opportunities for students, and fostering a culture of inquiry and research within classrooms.
In Line with Rwanda’s Education Strategies
These efforts are built on Rwanda's Education Sector Strategic Plan (ESSP), which prioritizes enhancing education quality and boosting technology competencies among schoolchildren. They also align with the country’s NST2 goals of advancing the capabilities of Rwandan citizens.
Minister Nsengimana noted that the program will employ clear, measurable standards to evaluate its impact. The most successful elements will be scaled nationwide while maintaining integrity and prioritizing privacy in the education system.
The Minister of Technology and Innovation, Paula Ingabire, highlighted that AI is a cornerstone for transforming Rwanda's education systems and ensuring a workforce prepared for the digital future.
