Gen. Makanika's Legacy Remembered in Bigizi Gentil's Powerful Tribute Song, "Afande Atazatugaya"

Bigizi Gentil pays tribute to Gen. Makanika with "Afande Atazatugaya," honoring his bravery and fight for the Banyamulenge people's rights in Congo.

Gen. Makanika, a prominent leader of the Twirwaneho militia, had aligned with the M23 faction to champion the rights of the Banyamulenge people and to liberate regions within the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Tragically, he was killed on February 19, 2025, in a drone strike carried out by the Coalition Forces of the Congolese National Army (FARDC). By the time of his passing, Makanika, alongside M23 and allies, had successfully taken strategic control of Goma and multiple other territories.

Bigizi Gentil, a renowned U.S.-based musician, immortalizes Makanika's unwavering courage in his latest song titled "Afande Atazatugaya." The song sheds light on Makanika's impactful words and actions, particularly his decision to leave the Congolese Army.

He had expressed frustration at the military's inability to defend the Banyamulenge people, who have endured relentless persecution, even allegedly due to certain factions within the armed forces. Gentil captures the essence of Makanika's vision and the struggles of the Banyamulenge community in profound lyrical storytelling.

In the song, Gentil narrates how Makanika's aspirations came to fruition shortly after his death. He sings, "At the break of dawn when you were gone, Twirwaneho advanced; Minembwe was reclaimed. [...] We will not bow our heads to be slaughtered; no, we must die so others may live." Known for his exceptional songwriting talent, Gentil describes the track as a tribute to a heroic figure whose efforts have inspired hope and resilience within his community.

Reflecting on Makanika's legacy, Gentil states: "We took Minembwe just as he had foretold, saying the time would come to stop defending ourselves and instead strike like bears. Once he was gone, only a day later, that prophecy came to pass as Minembwe of the bears launched its offensive. Twirwaneho had been defending themselves constantly, always under attack. But eventually, they transitioned from defense to offense just as he had predicted, and we reclaimed Minembwe." These impactful words emphasize Makanika's foresight and the strategic shift led by his followers posthumously.

Although Gentil's last concert took place over 13 years ago, he reveals he is preparing to release more songs with heartfelt messages. He expresses gratitude to his dedicated fans who have remained supportive throughout his musical journey. Furthermore, Gentil takes pride in how his work has consistently inspired individuals to strengthen their connection with God.
