Rwanda Premier League to Adopt FIFA-Approved VAR Technology in 2026

Rwanda Premier League introduces VAR in February 2026, enhancing refereeing standards with FIFA collaboration and cutting-edge technology.

On Monday, October 27, 2025, during a press conference at FERWAFA headquarters, it was revealed that the Rwanda Premier League will integrate VAR (Video Assistant Referee) technology into its matches starting February 2026. This shift towards embracing advanced sports technology aims to elevate the standards of refereeing in the league.

FERWAFA announced: "We are coordinating efforts to bring VAR from Dar Es Salaam to Rwanda as part of a referee training initiative. If the plan proceeds effectively, several Rwanda Premier League second-leg matches will serve as a trial platform for VAR implementation."

Fabrice Shema Ngoga emphasized the continuous drive to advance the league and transform Rwandan football. "Our discussions with FIFA aim to ensure the upcoming football season begins with Rwanda's own functioning VAR system. I am optimistic that our referees will receive comprehensive training to utilize the technology efficiently," he said.

This development follows heightened criticism from football teams and fans regarding inconsistent refereeing standards. FERWAFA recently took disciplinary measures, temporarily suspending some referees due to multiple controversies, highlighting the need for technological intervention in officiating.

VAR technology, a game-changer in modern football, was initially tested in 2016 in the United States before gaining official approval in early 2018. It made its global debut at the FIFA World Cup hosted in Russia, revolutionizing the sport with its ability to assist referees in making critical decisions.

The introduction of VAR to the Rwanda Premier League marks a significant milestone, signaling the beginning of a more modernized and fair football experience for players, officials, and fans alike.
