Referees Suspended in Rwanda Premier League for Controversial Officiating Decisions

FERWAFA suspends referees after errors in Rwanda Premier League matches, including missed cards and disallowed goals. Suspensions range up to 4 weeks.

The Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) has officially announced the suspension of three referees following a thorough review of their performances during the fourth matchday of the Rwanda Premier League, held between October 17 and 19, 2025.

The referees’ commission convened on Tuesday, October 21, to analyze these matches, as is customary after each matchday. FERWAFA specifically called out referee Ishimwe Claude for errors during the match where APR FC narrowly defeated Mukura 1-0. Ishimwe failed to issue a second yellow card, which would have led to a sending-off for Niyigena Clement after a foul.

This oversight has resulted in Ishimwe receiving a two-week suspension from officiating. In the same game, assistant referee Mugabo Eric disallowed a valid goal by Mukura VS, citing offside incorrectly. FERWAFA deemed this decision to be a significant error and imposed a more severe punishment, suspending Mugabo from officiating for four weeks.

The disciplinary measures didn’t end there. Assistant referee Habumugisha Emmanuel faced repercussions for his controversial decision during the third matchday clash between Gasogi United and Rayon Sports. Habumugisha wrongly nullified a Gasogi United goal in the 89th minute, claiming offside where none existed. Consequently, he has been suspended for four weeks.

These punitive actions underscore FERWAFA's commitment to upholding fairness in the Rwanda Premier League and ensuring the highest standards of match officiating.
