RBC Sounds Alarm Over COVID-19 Comeback in Rwanda

The Covid-19 variant NB.1.8.1 is spreading globally, accounting for 10% of cases. RBC highlights Rwanda's readiness with high vaccinations and hygiene tips.

Covid-19 has resurfaced as a global concern, nearly five years after the pandemic began, driven by the emergence of a new variant, NB.1.8.1. This variant, first identified in the United Kingdom, is now spreading to other parts of the world.

The NB.1.8.1 variant, responsible for 10% of global Covid-19 cases, has already been detected in Northern Ireland and Wales, raising alarms internationally.

In Rwanda, comprehensive assessments were conducted on Monday, June 9, 2025, following news of the virus reappearing in several countries. Professor Claude Mambo Muvunyi, the Director General of the Rwanda Biomedical Center (RBC), shared updates during an interview with IGIHE.

He revealed that out of 16,000 samples tested locally, 0.7% confirmed positive cases of Covid-19. All affected individuals are currently receiving proper medical care and attention.

Via its official X account, RBC addressed public concerns, indicating that while Covid-19 has not been eradicated, it does not currently pose a significant threat thanks to Rwanda’s widespread vaccination efforts. The country continues to demonstrate a high level of defense against the virus.

Seasonal respiratory infections like influenza and Covid-19 often escalate during seasonal transitions. RBC emphasized the importance of preventive habits, such as maintaining strong hygiene practices, frequently washing hands, and avoiding contact with others if experiencing flu-like symptoms.

Citizens remain urged to stay vigilant during this period of seasonal changes and global health concerns, safeguarding themselves and their communities with proactive measures.
