The National Umuganura Celebration
The 2025 National Umuganura celebration took center stage at Ubworoherane Stadium in Musanze District, an area known for its thriving economic and natural resources within Rwanda's Northern Province.
Welcome Address by the Mayor
During the event, Mayor Nsengimana Claudien of Musanze District extended a warm welcome to attendees and delivered a comprehensive overview of the district. His address highlighted significant strides in socio-economic advancement and community-focused initiatives.
Utilization of Natural Resources
The Mayor underscored how Musanze District has successfully leveraged its rich natural resources, including fertile agricultural land and abundant stone deposits. These assets contribute significantly to income generation in agriculture and construction industries. He also emphasized the district’s status as a key destination for tourism, with attractions such as the Volcanoes National Park and Lake Ruhondo driving local and national economic growth.
Achievements in Agriculture and Livestock
Notable accomplishments in agriculture were showcased, with a yield of 23 tons per hectare last year and maize achieving 4.3 tons per hectare. In the livestock sector, the “Gira Inka” program positively impacted 374 families, while innovative artificial insemination initiatives resulted in the successful birth of 3,966 calves, bolstering agricultural sustainability.
Job Creation and Economic Support
Between 2024 and 2025, Musanze District emerged as a hub for employment, creating 8,963 new jobs that predominantly benefitted women and youth. Supporting financial inclusion, 1,780 individuals secured loans through Umurenge SACCO, fostering entrepreneurship and localized business development.
Poverty Reduction and Industrial Growth
Efforts to alleviate poverty saw 11,286 households uplifted during this period. Musanze also welcomed two new factories—one specializing in alcohol production and the other focusing on textile manufacturing—adding to the 22 operational factories, thus advancing the district's industrial landscape.
The Hospitality Sector
The thriving hospitality industry was highlighted, with 44 active hotels serving as a cornerstone for tourism. Complementing these hotels are 119 supplementary establishments offering lodging, dining, and leisure services, ensuring visitors receive high-quality experiences.
Infrastructure Developments
Musanze continues to transition toward urban modernization, with five multi-story buildings completed this year. This progress adds to 20 buildings finalized last year while another 24 are set to be completed before the year ends, marking significant infrastructural advancements.
History and Administrative Background of Musanze District
Musanze District holds a unique administrative legacy, being one of the five districts in the Northern Province established by Law N°29/2005 on December 23, 2005. Its jurisdiction stems from the former Ruhengeri town, Mutobo District, Kinigi District, 14 sectors from the former Bugarura District, and 3 sectors from the former Bukamba District.
